Smoking takes a toll on you in many ways. Look in the mirror!

Picture
If you smoke, you already know you need to quit. It's bad for your heart, lungs, brain, and even your sex life.

But let's face it: You'd have kicked the habit yesterday if smoking's ill effects were a bit more obvious. What if each cigarette created a black pockmark on your face, for instance?

Well, smoking does damage your looks. Discover 15 ways smoking is ruining your appearance.

Bags under your eyes

Don't you hate it when you can't get a good night's sleep—and it shows on your face?

If you smoke, you're four times as likely as nonsmokers to report feeling unrested after a night's sleep, according to Johns Hopkins study.

Why the lack of shut-eye? It's possible that nightly nicotine withdrawal could be causing you to toss and turn. And unfortunately, poor sleep doesn't equal pretty.

Psoriasis

To be fair, psoriasis is an autoimmune-related skin condition that can show up even if you never touch a cigarette.

However, if you do smoke, your risk for the scaly skin condition goes up—a lot.

According to a 2007 study, if you puff a pack a day for 10 years or less, psoriasis risk goes up 20 percent; 11-20 years and your risk is 60 percent higher; and for those who pass the two-decade mark, the psoriasis risk more than doubles. (Even secondhand smoke during pregnancy or childhood is linked to a higher risk.)

Icky teeth

Wouldn't you love to have a set of dazzling white, Hollywood-like choppers? If you smoke, you can kiss that dream good-bye.

It's the nicotine in cigarettes that can stain teeth.

So in addition to the escalating costs of buying and smoking your cigs, add in the cost of tooth whitening. A professional procedure to clean your teeth costs an average of $500 to $1,000.

Premature aging and wrinkles

We can all appreciate a wizened visage—on our favorite nonagenarian that is. Wrinkles look anything but wise when they show up on a relatively young person who smokes.

And show up they will. Experts agree that smoking accelerates aging, so that smokers look 1.4 years older than nonsmokers, on average.

Why the wrinkly face? Smoking hampers the blood supply that keeps skin tissue looking supple and healthy.

Yellow fingers

The nicotine in cigarette smoke can not only make your teeth (and the walls of your home) brown, but it's also notorious for staining fingers and nails as well.

If you search the Internet, you can find a number of home remedies, including lemon juice, bleach solutions, and scrubbing with steel wool. Ouch.

Wouldn't it be easier—and less painful—to just quit?

Thinner hair

As if the wrinkly skin wasn't enough, smoking hurts your hair too. Experts think the toxic chemicals in smoke can damage the DNA in hair follicles and generate cell-damaging free radicals as well.

The end result? Smokers have thinner hair that tends to go gray sooner than nonsmokers. That is, if they have any hair at all.

Men who smoke are about twice as likely to lose their hair as nonsmokers, after taking into account factors that increase the risk of baldness, such as aging and genetics, according to a 2007 study in Taiwan.

Scarring

Nicotine causes vasoconstriction, a narrowing of the blood vessels that can limit oxygen-rich blood flow to the tiny vessels in the face or other parts of the body.

This means your wounds will take longer to heal and you’ll have scars that are bigger and redder than you would in a nonsmoking parallel universe.

Tooth loss

Smoking puts you at greater risk for all kinds of dental problems, including oral cancer and gum disease.

In fact, according to a 2005 U.K. study in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, smokers are up to six times more likely than nonsmokers to develop gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss.

Wouldn't you rather be doing, well, anything other than sitting in a dentist's chair?

Natural glow is gone

Ever notice how smokers' skin sometimes seems off? You're not alone. A 1985 study came up with the term Smoker's Face to describe certain facial characteristics, such as wrinkles, gauntness, and a gray appearance of the skin, caused by smoking.

Cigarette smoke contains carbon monoxide, which displaces the oxygen in your skin, and nicotine, which reduces blood flow, leaving skin dry and discolored. Cigarette smoking also depletes many nutrients, including vitamin C, which helps protect and repair skin damage.

Wound healing

Several studies have found that smokers do not heal as well after surgeries such as face-lifts, tooth extractions, and periodontal procedures.

So once cigarettes wrinkle up your face, you'll have a harder time correcting the damage with cosmetic surgery than people who've never smoked. (And your surgeon might not even perform the procedure until you agree to kick the habit.)

Warts

For reasons that aren't entirely clear, smokers are more susceptible to infection with human papillomavirus, a large family of viruses that can cause warts—including genital warts.

While genital warts are caused by sexually transmitted types of HPV, smoking is also a risk factor. Even taking the number of sex partners into account, women who smoke are nearly four times as likely to have genital warts as nonsmokers, according to one study.

Skin cancer

Smoking is a leading cause of cancer, including lung, throat, mouth, and esophageal cancer, so it should be no surprise that cigarettes can also increase your risk of skin cancer.

Stretch marks

The nicotine found in cigarettes damages the fibers and connective tissue in your skin, causing it to lose elasticity and strength.

Stretch marks, red skin striations that can gradually fade to a silvery hue, form when you gain weight rapidly. Anyone can get stretch marks with rapid weight gain (such as in pregnancy), but cigarettes can be a contributing factor.

Flabby tummy

Cigarettes can be an appetite suppressant, and often smokers have a lower body weight than nonsmokers. However, a 2009 study in the Netherlands found that smokers had more visceral fat than nonsmokers.

This deep fat pads internal organs and can accumulate in your midsection, ultimately increasing the risk of other diseases, such as diabetes.

Cataracts

More than half of Americans will have developed some degree of cataracts by age 80. Cigarette smoking can increase the risk of cataracts by putting oxidative stress on the lens of the eye.

In fact, continued smoking can add up to a 22 percent increased risk of cataract extraction, according to one study. And it's not too late to quit—the amount of cigarettes smoked was a more important risk factor than how long someone smoked.

"We Make Quitting Smoking EASIER when you are Ready to Quit"

Some Amazing Facts about Smoking Cigarettes …And why you shouldn’t even think about smoking another cigarette again!

1.    Cancer caused by smoking – cancer.org

Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths. It is linked with an increased risk of the following cancers:

  • lung
  • larynx (voice box)
  • oral cavity (mouth, tongue, and lips)
  • pharynx (throat)
  • esophagus (tube connecting the throat to the stomach)
  • stomach
  • pancreas
  • cervix
  • kidney
  • bladder
  • acute myeloid leukemia
2.    Nicotine addiction – cancer.org

Addiction is marked by the repeated, compulsive seeking or use of a substance despite its harmful effects and unwanted consequences. Addiction is defined as physical and psychological (mental and emotional) dependence on the substance. Nicotine is the addictive drug in tobacco. Regular use of tobacco products leads to addiction in many users.

About 70% of smokers say they want to quit and about 40% try to quit each year, but only 4% to 7% succeed without help. This is because smokers not only become physically addicted to nicotine; there is a strong emotional (psychological) aspect and they often link smoking with many social activities. All of these factors make smoking a hard habit to break.

In 1988, the U.S. Surgeon General concluded the following:

  • Cigarettes and other forms of tobacco are addicting.
  • Nicotine is the addicting drug in tobacco.
  • The ways people become addicted to tobacco are much like those that lead to addiction to other drugs such as heroin and cocaine.
3.    Why quit smoking? – cancer.org

Nicotine is a very addictive drug. People usually try to quit many times before they are successful. But the struggle can be worth the effort. In September 1990, the U.S. Surgeon General outlined what you gain when you quit smoking:

  • Quitting smoking has major health benefits that start right away. This is true for people who already have a smoking-related disease as well as those who don't.
  • Former smokers live longer than people who keep smoking. For example, people who quit smoking before age 50 have one-half the risk of dying in the next 15 years compared with people who keep smoking.
  • Quitting smoking lowers the risk of lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung diseases such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
  • Women who stop smoking before they get pregnant, or even during the first 3 to 4 months of pregnancy, reduce their risk of having a low birth-weight baby to that of women who never smoked.
  • The health benefits of quitting smoking are far greater than any risks from the weight gain or any emotional or psychological problems that may follow quitting.
Your risk of having lung cancer and other smoking-related cancers depends on how much you have been exposed to cigarette smoke over your lifetime. This is measured by the number of cigarettes you smoked each day, how you smoked them, how young you were when you started smoking, and the number of years you have smoked. There is no way to precisely measure a person's risk of getting cancer, but the more you smoke and the longer you do it, the greater your risk.

The good news is that the risk of having lung cancer and other smoking-related illnesses can be reduced if you stop smoking. The risk of lung cancer is less in people who quit smoking than in people who keep smoking the same number of cigarettes every day. The risk decreases as the number of years since quitting increases.

People who stop smoking while they are young get the greatest health benefits from quitting. Those who quit in their 30s may avoid most of the risk due to tobacco use. But even smokers who quit after age 50 largely reduce their risk of dying early. The argument that it is too late to quit smoking because the damage is already done is not true. It is never too late to quit smoking!

Why does President Barack Obama still smoke cigarette: quit smoking?

President Barack Obama signed the Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act on June 22, 2009. This act enables the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the ability, authority, and legislative power to oversee and regulate all tobacco products that are sold in the United States. The legislation encompasses several areas and focuses specifically on the way tobacco products are developed, purchased, marketed or advertised, and labeled. The act is unprecedented and the U.S. government has never had so great a hand in the oversight of the tobacco industry as it will now.

Due to studies conducted, the new legislature states that children using tobacco products is classified as a pediatric disease. Studies found that the majority of new tobacco users were all under the legal age to purchase tobacco products. Meanwhile, marketing campaigns have targeted children the hardest. The FDA will put limits on the marketing campaigns used to promote tobacco products. There is a good possibility that the minimum age for smoking will be increased and new warning labels on cigarettes might be created.

The Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Act describes smoking and the use of tobacco products as a health problem. However, before the new act, state and federal funding was not available to combat the problem. The new act plans to create programs that would prevent new tobacco users, oversee and regulate the development of tobacco products, control the marketing and distribution of tobacco products, and take aggressive steps to prevent childhood nicotine addictions.

Statistics show that tobacco is responsible for over 400,000 deaths in the United States each year. There are approximately 8,600,000 United States citizens who suffer with chronic illness and disease due to smoking. However, these deaths and illnesses are preventable. By preventing new addictions to nicotine and reducing the amount of people who use tobacco products, these rates will drop tremendously. The burden that smoking and tobacco related illnesses places on the health care system cannot be denied. Preventing children from smoking can attribute to a decrease of at least 10,000,000 smokers nationwide. This results in healthier lives, a reduction in sickness and disease, ease on health care, and is an effective strategy for combating this public health crisis. Past campaigns for preventing childhood addictions to nicotine have been virtually ineffective. The new legislation plans to change that.

The tobacco industry not only spends money attracting new users, but also in retaining current tobacco users. Additionally, the focus has been placed on showing smoking in a favorable and acceptable light. Tobacco companies regularly add flavorings to cigarettes that will keep users addicted. When special prices are offered on cigarettes and tobacco products, it is often underage users who benefit most from these specials. Marketing campaigns have targeted children and have depicted smoking in a favorable, healthy light. For example, the use of tobacco advertisements and sponsorship during sporting events sends the wrong signal to the nation’s most vulnerable users. The new act will limit the marketing and advertisement of cigarettes and tobacco products, and ensure that children are not directly targeted by tobacco marketing campaigns.

The tobacco industry will no longer be allowed to aim their advertising methods at children, teens, and underage smokers. Congress found in its study that nations that adopt a strict or stringent ban on tobacco advertising have the greatest results in preventing youth from smoking. The Family Smoking Prevention & Tobacco Control Act empowers local communities at the state and federal level to implement programs that will effectively prevent the underage use of cigarettes and tobacco products.
